A silver color metal and enamel device 1 3/16 inches (3.02 cm) in height overall consisting of a vertical white sword, hilted yellow, the blade surmounted by a red (scarlet) wyvern and above a black door bolt, all encircled by a continuous silver scroll, arched at the top behind the sword and wyvern's wings and inscribed in base "SERVICE AND SECURITY" in black letters.
The sword refers to the aggressive and protective aspects of the organization. With the heraldic wyvern, a two-legged dragon representing vigilance, and the heraldic door bolt for secrecy, it symbolizes the basic mission of U.S. Army Special Security Group, former designation of the unit.
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the U.S. Army Special Security Group on 30 March 1971. It was redesignated for the 716th Military Intelligence Battalion on 21 November 1996.
